1. Florida State University’s fall from the Associated Press Top-25 College Football poll marks a tough start to their season. After beginning the college football season with two straight losses, to Georgia Tech and at home against Boston College, the team was knocked out of the rankings.
Fans have grown increasingly aggravated with Coach Mike Norvell and the team’s performance. Frustration peaked after quarterback DJ Uiagalelei’s poor showing, with some fans chanting for backup quarterback Brock Glenn to take the field. This early-season slump has pressured the team to regroup and find its form as it continues its schedule.
2. Scottie Scheffler made history in the final round of the 2024 TOUR Championship, shooting 4-under 67 to win by four shots over Collin Morikawa. This secured his 13th career PGA TOUR victory and his claim of the FedEx Cup.
With this win Scheffler becomes the first player to win The Players Tournament, The Masters Tournament and the FedEx Cup in the same season. His remarkable achievement has solidified his place among the sport’s elite, capping off an unforgettable year.
3. Alexei Popyrin pulled off an upset in the third round of the U.S. Open as he defeated Novak Djokovic, the reigning champion and 24-time Grand Slam winner, in just four sets. Ranked 28th, the powerful serving Australian shocked the tennis world with a 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory. This unexpected win sent one of the best players packing and marked a significant moment in his career.
4. The No.13 Louisiana State University Tigers suffered a tough loss to No.23 University of Southern California Trojans in Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 1. It’s Coach Brian Kelly’s third season with LSU. The team started their season on a rough note, falling 27-20 to the Trojans in week one. Under Kelly, the Tigers have lost their last three season openers. USC scored 14 points in the final six minutes to secure the win.
5. Arizona Diamondbacks center fielder Corbin Carroll smashed a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning, to secure an 8-5 win for the Diamondbacks over the New York Mets on Wednesday, Aug. 28. The Diamondbacks, down 5-4, managed to load the bases with two outs against Mets pitcher Edwin Díaz after he walked pinch-hitter Pavin Smith and shortstop Geraldo Perdomo. Carroll then delivered a stunning second homer of the night into the right-field seats, turning the game around. Despite his previous reputation as a top closer, Díaz couldn’t hold his team’s lead, marking his sixth blown save of the season.
