The debate of Lebron James versus Michael Jordan for the title of greatest NBA player of all time has captivated fans and analysts for years. Both athletes have made an unerasable mark on the sport with their impressive statistics, unique playing styles and legacies.
Students and professors here at FGCU had a lot to say about who they believe deserves that title.
When it comes to deciding who is the best, what are the factors that come into play?
Who has more championships or points? When looking at certain stats, Jordan has a slight advantage. Jordan has won more championships, MVP awards and Defensive Player of the Year titles. However, James is the all-time leading scorer in the NBA and has more steals and rebounds than Jordan.
Both are astounding to watch.
Jordan consistently showcased exceptional talent around the rim. He was one of the top players of his time. He was able to score on any defender.
He decided to take his game from good to great as his career progressed. Jordan was averaging 28.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game. Jordan played all 82 regular season games five times throughout his career, which James has only done once. His outstanding performance on the Chicago Bulls named him the 1984 NBA Rookie of the Year, but it wasn’t until seven years later he won his first championship.
He knew that, to win a title, his team would require more than just a superstar, but also a good supporting cast.
In 1991, Jordan changed the game. He mastered the art of utilizing his teammates, and understood what it took to both improve himself and them. He also developed a deadly jump
shot, one of the best in the league. He ended the year by taking his team to the championship. Jordan was able to go to the finals six times in eight years in a competitive conference and still dominate.
Tyshaun Cunningham, who is a student here at FGCU, believes that Michael Jordan deserves the title for greatest of all time.
“He is six for six in the finals,” Cunningham said. “He didn’t lose and he won’t lose this debate.”
Jordan’s documentary, “The Last Dance,” showcased to the younger generation his competitive spirit, clutch performances, and greatness the moment he entered the league. The documentary indicated that he is much more than just a trendy shoe brand.
James was selected as the first overall pick in the 2003 draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He quickly rose to fame in the NBA due to his athleticism and impressive stats.
During his rookie year he became one of only three players to average at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game. This performance won him NBA Rookie of the Year in 2003.
James is still dominating the NBA and breaking records 21 years later at 39-years-old. He holds the all-time scoring record in NBA history, with over 40,000 points. His ability to maintain his performance over the years is remarkable and his dedication to his craft and fitness have allowed him to stay at the top of his game for so long.
It is inspiring to see James continue to compete with younger players in the league. Philip Hajjar, a student here at FGCU, thinks that James’s longevity in the league plays into how great of a player he is.
“I think Lebron is better,” Hajjar said. “He is almost 40 years old and still undoubtedly in the top five players. He’s a good basketball player, and the stats prove it too.”
While some have their opinions about who is better, others recognize both of their talents equally and believe that both have their unique strengths.
Professor Nicholas Bianco is confident that both James and Jordan are the greatest basketball players of all time.
“The goat is of course number 23,” Bianco said.” “Jordan wore 23 and Lebron’s number is 23.”
