For water sports lovers, the water skiing club plans to make a splash in the FGCU scene.
The club allows beginners to learn more about waterskiing techniques and gives more experienced waterskiers a chance to practice and improve their skills.
The club’s president, Alexis Mishler, has been in the waterskiing world for some time and is excited to introduce students to the sport.
“I saw a really good opportunity here at FGCU with the waterskiing courses to get the club started,” Mishler said.
Mishler first gained interest in the sport when she was five years old and fell in love with waterskiing. She entered competitions when she was nine and has wanted to continue practicing and get others interested in the sport.
“My parents moved to a ski lake, had this course, saw people skiing and I wanted to try it,” Mishler said. “So then my dad learned about it and taught us how to ski.”
For others looking to join the club, she hopes to spark their passion for the sport and get people to meet others with the same interest.
“You don’t need prior experience; you can start at any level,” Mishler said. “The collegiate water scene is enjoyable. There are so many levels of collegiate skiing, and you can compete at all levels. It’s such an inclusive sport.”
The club is working on setting meeting times and dates for when they can come together to ski on the waterfront at North Lake Village.
“We have plans to host the meetings in room 211 at the Water School, hopefully later in the afternoon,” Mishler said.
The club’s vice president, Delaney Greve, is excited about the new club and its opportunity to grow. Like Mishler, Greve has been involved in water skiing since she was young and has enjoyed the sport ever since.
“My hope for the club is to give FGCU students who enjoy water skiing or want to learn how to ski a fun environment and community to do this sport,” Greve said. “If you have an interest or passion for the sport, this is the club for you.”
To grow the club, Greve, Mishler and other fellow officers plan to advertise it on Instagram, @fgcuwaterski, Eagle Link and table at future events.
Along with improving students’ water skiing skills, the club plans to compete in local competitions.
