College students, particularly first-years, can easily become overwhelmed between balancing their school and personal lives. Many struggle to establish a good rhythm, while others have difficulty knowing what works best for them. Fortunately, there’s an easy solution to these problems.
TikTok, a popular social media platform, made its U.S. debut back in 2018. The platform is most commonly known for short-form entertainment; users post memes, trendy videos, sponsored content and much more. While the app has become a controversial topic, people forget that TikTok can be used to enhance one’s education through the resources distributed by various creators.
TikTok has provided motivational videos, study tips, app recommendations and advice for balancing school and mental health; making it a valuable resource for first-year students and graduates.
Additionally, the TikTok algorithm has created several small communities dedicated to specific fields. A recent update added a STEM page. Students that are a major in engineering, science, or math, can utilize this page for updates on research and a sense of togetherness.
‘StudyTok’ is a side of the app generally focused on the lives of college students. Whether a student wants to hear about dorm essentials, advice on how to study, test-taking preparation, application recommendations, or what technology might fit a student best, they will commonly end up on StudyTok.
How is it motivational?
StudyTok features thousands of content creators encouraging students to study more. These videos are often aesthetically pleasing, inspiring the audience to keep a clean living space. Another common cliche in this genre of content is the time lapses of a creator studying.
While this can sound boring, StudyTok has a certain way of motivating people to succeed academically in a similar way to how a short vlog or podcast can inspire someone to be productive.
Types of apps recommended for students:
Instead of simply googling, “Best apps for college students,” try to watch some videos on TikTok. Creators have shown how to utilize recommended applications, and why they use specific apps:
- Microsoft OneNote: A note-taking application that can be used on a MacBook or PC. It generates different note-taking templates to help stay organized. It works like Microsoft Word, with additional tabs to enhance note-taking. It’s free to users already subscribed to Microsoft 369.
- Canva: A platform used for graphic design. Create slideshows, brand labels, or collages. A majority of the tools provided are free. Canva Pro costs $12.99. Upgrading to a subscription does lead to a few more features.
Three pieces of advice from creators:
- Time Management: Always stay ahead of schedule. Students should try their best to stay one step ahead of assignments.
- Building a Network: Get involved in a club or sport. Have the courage to meet people and make connections.
- Prioritize Mental Health: It’s easy to become burnt out quickly as a student. Once or twice a week, prioritize resting. Take a day off.
Ultimately, students can use StudyTok to learn different skills and find a community of like-minded peers.
