Happy Halloween! Spooky month is finally here, and with it, comes the season of scares!
What better way to celebrate Halloween than to indulge in some horrific works of writing? Nothing screams classic and thrilling more than a terrifyingly terrific page-turner. Whether you’re reading them physically or digitally, read along for two of the most popular, and well-loved horror books to read this Halloween!
#1 – The Haunting of Hill House
First off, let’s take a look at Shirley Jackson’s “The Haunting of Hill House.” If the name Shirley Jackson rings a bell, you may remember her as the writer of “The Lottery,” another work featuring her unique blend of horror and domesticity.
“The Haunting of Hill House” follows three participants of an experiment, Eleanor Vance, Luke Sanderson and Theodora – an iconic character amongst the LGBTQ+ community.
All participants are employed by Dr. John Montague who must all stay at a haunted manor for a few nights. Conflict ensues and Eleanor comes to feel a psychological connection to the manor.
Shirley’s novel is groundbreaking for many reasons, one being its unique brand of horror. The horror comes from how nothing is explained, seen for sure, or predictable. Most readers will love this story for its interesting characters, imagery and simple yet well-developed theme of horror.
For those who would rather not buy or rent the book, a series based on the novel is available to watch on Netflix, under the same name.
#2 – The Exorcist
Another popular horror story to read around Halloween is a classic that most have probably heard before – this is William Peter Blatty’s “The Exorcist.” While most people are more familiar with the movie, the book is just as horrifying, if not more, than its film adaptation.
For those unaware, the story follows two priests and their attempts to help free eleven-year-old Regan MacNeil, the daughter of a famed actress, from her demonic possession. The book derives its scares from its uniquely graphic imagery and violence.
Alongside the horror, there is also a feeling of inner sadness as it’s implied that the girl may never recover or be rid of the demon within her body. However, in my opinion, the real horror comes from the fact that “The Exorcist” is based on a true story.
There are millions upon millions of horror stories nowadays… some old, some new, some classic and some cheesy. You should explore what really makes you scared before searching for a spooky read.
Whether you enjoy these horror stories or not, Eagle Media wishes you all a happy and safe Halloween!
