Experts Raise Concern Over Condition of Sanibel Island’s Ecosystem
After being battered by two years of brutal hurricanes, many experts are concerned over the state of Sanibel’s habitat.
The island has many freshwater pools that are home to freshwater fish, and amphibians and also act like watering holes for animals that live on the land. The major hurricanes that have slammed the barrier island recently have tainted many of the pools, impacting the health of the creatures that rely on them for survival according to WINK News.
Many experts are specifically concerned about the fact that the major hits from Ian, Helene and now Milton have been in rapid succession.
“That doesn’t allow ecosystems to recover as quickly and maybe as fully as they possibly could, so that is something that does concern me as a biologist,” Bob Gerwin, a manager at the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge said.
However many remain hopeful that one of Southwest Florida’s most iconic islands will be able to bounce back.
