After an away stretch of wins at the UMass showcase the weekend of Nov. 8-10, the FGCU Division II club hockey team returned to Hertz Arena to play the Lindenwood University Lions on Nov. 15-16.
The first period started with a goal from Eagles forward Adam Beauvais a little over a minute into the game. He was assisted by forward and captain Jack Cohen. Following Beauvais’ goal, forward Carson Engelmann put up a second goal for FGCU. On a powerplay in the thirteenth minute, Nick Jones, a forward for the Lions, scored, ending the period with the Eagles leading 2-1.
After nine minutes into the second FGCU’s Beauvais scored on a power play with forward David Walsh putting the puck in on another power play. Lions forward Zac Maupin scored in the fourteenth minute, which was followed by two goals from his teammate Jones, the second one being earned on a power play. This sent the teams into the third period tied 4-4.
Eagles’ forward Ryan O’Halloran completed a goal on a power play at the 3:22 mark in the third period. The Lions returned the goal a few minutes later.
FGCU and Lindenwood fought to be the one to put the puck in during the final minutes of the game. Ultimately, Lindenwood forward Jones scored in the eighteenth minute and the Eagles were unable to score in the remaining minutes leaving the final score at 6-5.
After facing a loss on Friday the Eagles came back to the rink and secured a 4-3 win against Lindenwood.
“I think on Saturday night, after the first period, we made some changes. We were down two to nothing after the first and came back to win the game. I think that as a whole group, the players responded well, and we’re happy about it,” FGCU coach Eric Mabie said.
The only goals scored in the first period were from Lindenwood. Defenseman Ryan Granville punched in the first goal within the first five minutes. This was followed by forward Logan Millhausen at the 17-minute mark. The teams entered the locker room with the Lions leading 2-0.
FGCU defenseman Brady Carlock scored the only powerplay of the game. Lions defenseman Chase McClellan retaliated, scoring his team’s third goal of the game minutes later. With less than two minutes in the period, Beauvais scored, which marked his ninth goal in FGCU’s ninth game of the season. This put the score at 2-2.
Only 48 seconds into the third, forward Jordan Comilla put the Eagles’ in the lead. FGCU had another goal completed by O’Halloran and was the only team to score in the period.
These two goals gave the Eagles a one-goal lead. FGCU goaltender Mason Decaire, protected the goal from the nine attempted shots by the Lions in the third to earn the Eagles a 4-3 win.
The Eagles exited the weekend with a 10-4 overall record. FGCU prepares to take on Sacred Heart University on Nov. 22 and Nov. 23 at Hertz Arena.
