When it comes to sports here in Florida, it’s not common to think about ice skating, but for some FGCU students, that’s exactly what they thought. A new club on campus has emerged that allows students to harness their skating skills.
Whether you’re a beginner, you’ve been skating your whole life, or you just want to have some fun on the ice, this club is perfect for you. Within the ice skating club, these members have their own coach at Hertz Arena and are working on not only basic skills but also ice skating techniques.
“People of all skill levels are welcome. Whether you have never been on the ice before or you’re interested in competing, you will be surprised at how much your skating skills can improve being a part of this club,” Aleksandra Dabic, treasurer of the FGCU Ice-Skating Club, said.
On Thursday evenings, you can find the club in the gym practicing ice exercises to increase their abilities. These workouts include a variety of activities to improve rotation aspects, balance, strength, and even jump height, all while having fun and laughing the whole way through.
These sessions are particularly beneficial for skaters, as they focus on essential off-ice training. They help skaters improve their physical fitness, which is crucial for performing complex skating maneuvers. The exercises are designed to enhance core strength, flexibility, and overall athleticism.
Marina Bunyatova, the president of the ice-skating club shared how this club has grown.
“The club is where I found my passion,” Bunyatova said. “Skating uniquely combines self-expression and intense workouts, all in a supportive, yet competitive environment.”
As this club is freshly growing, in its second year, they are doing everything they can to provide their skaters with the best possible coaching, time and advice.
The club’s creation has sparked interest and enthusiasm among students who might not have otherwise considered ice skating. It serves as a testament to the diverse interests and talents within the FGCU community by providing a platform for students to explore and develop their skating abilities
Looking ahead, the club’s performances at hockey game halftimes will be a significant milestone. These events will not only showcase the skaters’ talents but also raise awareness about the club within the broader FGCU community. The group showcase and solo performances will be a celebration of the hard work and dedication of all the members.
“The club strives to provide an opportunity for everyone to be a part of the skating community and fulfill their childhood dreams through skating,” Bunyatova said.
