Used to a strict routine at her job at a local tanning salon, a curly-haired brunette worked mindlessly. Suddenly, a tall man walked into the building, and the woman felt an immediate connection to him. Their eyes locked, and the two felt drawn together, even though they were mere strangers.
At that moment, the man knew he was going to spend the rest of his life with her and started a conversation. This connection turned into a marriage that has lasted for 32 years and a daughter– me– who dreams of finding her own fairytale romance one day.
Valentine’s Day is a holiday filled with carnations, chocolates and lots of love. This messaging is commonly depicted in movies, books and other media. Valentine’s Day can celebrate anything from long-term relationships to new connections. Yet, it raises the age-old question: Is love at first sight real?
Love is a difficult topic for some. People have a hard time imagining themselves in relationships and often question whether their idea of a relationship is based in reality or a fantasy.
When dating was more rooted in day-to-day life, the idea of “falling in love” was a much more pressing one. Now that dating apps dominate the scene, things have changed. Many treat relationships as a way to earn immediate gratification, and the amount of single pringles searching for that “once-in-a-lifetime” idea of love seems to be in decline.
Love isn’t something that many college students are searching for. Some are too busy, some are too lazy and some don’t even try.
Now, it’s hard to find what many would call the ideal partner—someone who is willing to buy you flowers to fill the empty vase on your desk, take you out to a fancy restaurant or watch your favorite movies.
The point is, the dating scene is much different than it used to be. It is no longer like what you may see in a romance movie. I think we need to spice it back up. So, instead of romance movies being wish fulfillment, let’s make them real. We should actually learn how to “Lose a Guy in 10 Days” or fall in love like in “When Harry Met Sally” and “The Notebook.”
Though these romance movies can seem over-the-top, they remind people that love can not just be real but also powerful.
While the idea of “love at first sight” seems fantastical, it’s something that people can hold onto. However, it is understandable why some may lose hope when it comes to finding love. In reality, love is not always instant, and you might realize you’re in love with someone later down the road. Regardless, love still holds power. So, we should really be asking if we are ready to believe in love again.
