No one could have predicted the outcome of this year’s Super Bowl.
The Eagles defeated the Chiefs in a massive blowout with a final score of 40-22. They prevented Kansas City from three-peating in the Super Bowl and redeemed themselves from their Super Bowl LVII against the Chiefs in the same game two years ago.
This impressive win came thanks to the Eagles’ outstanding defense this game and Jalen Hurts’ ability to pull through as a quarterback and stay coordinated with his receivers.
One cannot talk about this year’s Super Bowl without talking about the MVP, Jalen Hurts. Most people expected the role of MVP to land in either Patrick Mahomes (KC) or Saquon Barkley’s (PHI) hands, but Hurts played an exceptional game and earned this title.
This game brought his passer rating up to 109.4, the 4th greatest of all time.
Hurts completed 17 of 22 passes over 221 yards before scoring three touchdowns across the game (two passing and one rushing), which adds to his impressive feats this Sunday.
Some other notable achievements on the Eagles’ offense were among players Jake Elliot, AJ Brown, Devonta Smith and Barkley.
Elliot scored 16 points for the Eagles this game between field goals and one-point conversions, which is now the highest for a kicker to score in a Super Bowl.
Brown had nine catches over 139 yards and a touchdown. Smith completed four receptions as well as a 46-yard reception and a touchdown. Barkley completed 57 rushing yards, with an average of 2.3 yards per rush.
That stat is about half of his average throughout the season. However, this is due to deliberate coverage on the Chiefs’ defense’s behalf. And nobody can forget Cooper DeJean’s pick-six on Mahomes, the rookie’s first career interception and the second Super Bowl pick-six by a rookie.
Of course, offense isn’t the only factor in winning a game. The Eagles’ defense guarded the Chiefs with a dominant stance.
Philadelphia’s defense recorded six sacks throughout the game, with Milton Williams (two sacks) and Josh Sweat (two and a half sacks) denying Mahomes the chance to move the ball down the field and putting heavy mental pressure on him.
They kept the Chiefs under 300 yards and forced three turnovers. Zach Baun became the first Eagles linebacker to catch multiple interceptions in the postseason.
After the game, Mahomes described the absolute beatdown the Eagle’s defense gave him as “the worst thing in the world.”
In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs pulled their score from six to 22, shortening the Eagles’ overwhelming deficit throughout the game.
With the Eagles securing the win in Super Bowl LIX, the future looks promising for the Philadelphia team. Hurts is now sitting as the top Quarterback in the League. They have a seemingly unstoppable offense and a relentless defense.
If the Eagles can keep this team strong, we may witness the beginning of a dynasty for Philadelphia. As for Kansas City, while they may have suffered a heavy loss this weekend, they will undoubtedly continue to be a great team. Mahomes has plenty of years ahead of him to remedy this loss.
