Florida Fossil Hunters Discover Half-Million Year-Old Fossil Bed
When Florida Fossil hunters went diving in the Steinhatchee River in 2022, they discovered a fossil bed including remains of horses, sloths, and large armadillo-like animals that fell into a sinkhole. The fossil collectors, Robert Sinibaldi and Joseph Branin called in experts to further excavate the site.
The fossils are likely from a period in the ice age called the middle Irvingtonian, a time period regarded as understudied according to Islander News.
The discovery was assisted in part by Florida’s lenient fossil permit. The permitting system allows nearly anyone to discover fossils and help experts learn more about Florida’s history.
The exploration is still ongoing.
