Fort Myers Shrimp Fest Experiences Largest Turnout Since Hurricane Ian
The annual Fort Myers Shrimp Fest was held last week and saw a huge spike in both attendance and shrimp sales.
The event held in Bayside Veterans Park hosted a parade, a 5k run, over 40 local vendors and a shrimp eating competition according to Fox 4.
Residents and tourists aren’t the only ones who enjoy the festival, local shrimpers see a massive spike in shrimp sales every year around the event. One of the last large local seafood companies, Erickson & Jensen is revered for their large gulf shrimp.
“They give us this wonderful pink golden shrimp. The fresh shrimp here is amazing. It’s the best on the planet,” Andrew Yelle, president of Fort Myers Beach Lions Club said.

Florida Mother and Son Team Operated $37 Million Mini Bank Out of Their Home
The duo operated an illegal check-cashing business out of their Homestead residence. They handled payment for contractors who mainly employed undocumented migrants.
The business operated under the name JANV Construction Services and hosted a website that claimed they were in the construction business. Federal authorities became suspicious of JANV when they noticed multiple contractors and other construction companies writing checks to JANV, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
The mother, Anneri Sagrario Izurieta, a lawful U.S. resident from Honduras was detained and was found by a judge to be a flight risk, therefore being refused bond.
The son, Joseph Abdel Navarro Verde, 33, is a U.S. citizen and was released on a $200,000 personal surety bond.

Secret Service Shoots Man Near White House
A man traveled from Indiana to Washington D.C. was shot by authorities after he brandished a firearm near the White House Sunday morning.
The man was flagged as a suicide risk by local police and the Secret Service was alerted before he arrived in D.C. The Secret Service confronted the man on the street after finding his car, when agents found the man holding a firearm. He was then shot by the Secret Service.
The incident occurred one block from the White House. The president was not in D.C., instead at Mar-a-Lago at the time of the shooting, according to NPR.
The man was transported to a local hospital where his condition is unknown.
The incident is under investigation by Washington’s Metropolitan Police.
