The FGCU Chemistry Club hosted a Pi Day celebration and fundraiser on the Library Lawn. Each year, math enthusiasts around the world celebrate Pi Day on March 14 (3/14) – the date mimics the first three digits of pi.
For $2, students had the opportunity to pie a professor in the Chemistry Department. At the event was Tobias Pedro Jorge, the president of the Chemistry Club. The event took place on March 14 from 2 p.m to 3 p.m.
“Right now, we’re going through the process of changing officer positions. We have a lot of different ideas, especially chemistry, science activities and demonstrations for next year to help support the future officers,” Jorge said.
For the Chemistry Club, the Pi Day Fundraiser is a returning tradition.
“This is one of the traditions that they’ve done two, three years ago. We didn’t get to do this last year. It was actually two years since they had done the pie event,” said Jorge. “We wanted to bring that back, and we know a lot of the students have some rivals out there.”
Anthony Hoffman was one of the professors who got pied.
“I think the club’s a very good thing to give back, and they help schools and things like that, so it’s a really nice day to get involved in,” Hoffman said.
Hoffman described his experience at the festival as “pretty interesting.”
“I decided to do this at the last second, so here we are — [it’s] very nice seeing a lot of students that you don’t normally see getting to pie their professor, so they’re raising money. They’re having a good time. It’s very nice.”
“We have the majority of the chemistry department out here to support the club and we’re really grateful for that,” said Jorge. “They want to support it, and we want to use that to our benefit to help benefit the club.”
