Nardwuar, a well-known interviewer among many upcoming artists, interviewed Tyler The Creator back in 2023 for approximately 22 minutes. During the interview, Tyler suggested artists should be releasing music on Tuesdays instead of Fridays. He reasoned that some people might assume streams go up on the weekends, but as Tyler states, he calls it a lot of “passive listening,” at parties or the gym, people aren’t actually tuned in and listening. Rather, on a weekday when people are engaging in their music more on their commute to work or school because, in the 30-minute time frame, you can really dive into the music because once that’s over, you get back into whatever it is that brings you back into reality. Tyler also mentions for one to put so much craftsmanship and effort into then release a song at midnight when you’re dropping in the states seems to be like a waste when people are sleeping on the East Coast and others are going to on the West, dropping in the mornings earlier in the week seems to be the way.
Now, when we look at Tyler the Creator’s newest album release “CHROMAKOPIA” he in fact released it on a Monday and earned over 85 million first-day streams on the global Spotify chart. The biggest hip-hop album debut of 2024 and the top 20 of all time. On the 12th track of CHROMAKOPIA, “Like him,” Tyler walks you through his relationship with his absent father, describing his longing for a paternal relationship, and comparing this longing to, “chasing a ghost.” The song starts off with Tyler’s mother, Bonita, drawing comparisons between Tyler and his Father transitioning to the lyrics, “Do I look like him, Like him?” throughout the song. By the end of the song, Tyler’s mother takes accountability for keeping his father out of his life knowing he wanted to be involved and so she made mistakes. This confession of hers lifts this blame on his father, opening up a new perspective on their relationship.
