Florida Gulf Coast University’s men’s basketball head coach Joe Dooley earned his 100th career win Saturday evening as the team played arguably its best game this season. Cruising past USC Upstate, the Eagles ended the game 86-72.
“We got some offensive rhythm. I thought once we got into offensive rhythm we played really well and we were fortunate to slow them down a little bit in the second half,” said Dooley. “The big thing was really moving the ball. We had good open shots.”
FGCU is now 21-7 on the season and 11-1 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
It was a high scoring game for the Eagles, racking up 86 points. Up till Saturday night’s performance, the highest scoring game for the Eagles this season had produced 84 points.
After tip, USC Upstate held the lead for a few minutes, but soon FGCU responded with dunks and threes from all over the arc.
Brett Comer now holds over 800 career points after leading the team with 22 points in Saturday night’s game. He also led with a game-high nine assists.
Bernard Thompson went 100 percent from the 3-point line and ended the night with 19 points.
“I felt good during warm ups. I was just locked in, a little more focused.” said Thompson.
“[Thompson] is our best scorer,” said Comer.  “I’m happy to have him back. He carried us for a little bit.”
The Eagles moved the ball well and created plays for each other. Shot opportunities were passed up for smarter ones and things seemed to finally click. The team chemistry was there and players were selfless with their passes and movement.
FGCU plays at home Wednesday night against University of North Florida at 7 p.m. The Eagles will be looking to secure their No.1 seed position in the conference tournament.
