FGCU took its first win of the season at home on Sunday afternoon. The team demonstrated its talent despite the sweltering 102 heat index.
After 34 minutes, Tabby Tindell put FGCU on the board with the assist from Darien Davis. This goal put Tindell as the record holder for most points recorded in program history. The team’s second goal off Tindell to Paulina Speckmaier came at 58 minutes.
“It’s a good feeling to be able to contribute to my team in that way,” said Tindell, who was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year in 2014. “This is my family here. I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.”
Following FGCU’s draw against Ole Miss, the team was ecstatic to record its first win.
“It was good to get back on the field there and get a little bit of redemption from Friday night,” Tindell said. “The first half was a little sloppy for us, and there’s always things we want to improve upon. So, that’s what we’ll be doing this week at practice and improving the areas where we were a little bit weaker this weekend.”
The FGCU women’s soccer team holds the No. 1 position in A-Sun according to the preseason. This preview holds a glimpse of what will hopefully come with the continuation of the season.
“We told them, ‘Don’t get too high on wins. Don’t get too low if it doesn’t go well,’” said FGCU head coach Jim Blankenship. “There are opportunities, and we have to make sure that we learn from them.”
The team begins its on-the-road journey next, beginning with the USF Soccer Classic in Tampa next weekend. Following its weekend in Tampa, the team will travel to California to take on Cal State Fullerton and San Diego State. Blankenship expects excellence from his team but understands the challenge of away games.
“It’s such an important part of it,” Blankenship said, mentioning preseason games against UCF and Florida. “It’s why we went on the road for preseason. It’s not going to be easy. It’s never easy when you’re on the road.”
The Eagles are now 1-0-1 heading into their third game of the season.
