Headbands of Hope is a national organization that donates to cancer research and to kids battling cancer.
Since the launch of the company in 2012, Headbands of Hope has donated more than $40,000 and 40,000 headbands.
“Headbands of Hope is a company that dedicates itself to helping children with cancer feel happy and confident,” said Jessica Scanlon, a senior communication major and an interdisciplinary studies minor.
Scanlon is the campus representative for FGCU. Scanlon saw Jessica Ekstrom, the founder and CEO of Headbands of Hope, speak at a panhellenic conference in Atlanta, which is what urged her to get involved.
“Her story just made me fall in love,” Scanlon said. “As I was sitting in the audience wiping the tears from my face, I knew I had to get involved.”
As the campus representative, Scanlon hopes to connect Headbands of Hope with a local children’s cancer center and sell headbands at events on campus.
Headbands of Hope works with local retailers to sell its product in stores. Local stores that sell Headbands of Hope include Apricot Lane in Gulf Coast Town Center and Trader Rick’s in Bell Tower Shops. Accessories can also be purchased through the Headbands of Hope website,headbandsofhope.com. For every headband that is purchased, Headbands of Hope donates $1 to a cancer research facility and one headband to a child with cancer.
