Being one of the three freshman on the FGCU men’s golf team, Andrew Potter brings something new to the team, and it’s not being the only blond.
Talking to Potter, it’s immediately noticeable that he has an accent. Born in Tweed Heads, Australia on March 4, 1997, Potter is a young, well-traveled college freshman.
At the age of 15 he was given the opportunity to follow his dreams.
“During my time in Australia, I went to two schools. The first was called The Southport School and the second was All Saints Anglican School. I played a lot of sports when I grew in Australia. After only being at All Saints for a year, my mum gave me an opportunity to move to America and to pursue golf at the next level,” Potter said.
Potter moved to Naples, where he attended the Community School of Naples. “Leaving Australia at the age of 15 was hard because I had made a good group of friends at All Saints, I would have to leave the rest of my family behind since they were all grown up and moving halfway across the world isn’t that easy either,” said Potter.
Missing his mom, two older brothers and one older sister, Potter took some time adjusting to the American way of life. As a child, he played rugby, tennis, baseball, cricket and golf.
“After I left TSS in the eighth grade, I decided to focus myself to golf. I was always meeting new people at tournaments in my home state and seeing how my skills compared to them.”
His parents now live in Naples, while his siblings remain in Australia. Potter says he misses things about Australia and continues to visit home for the holidays but is not sure if he will ever live there again.
“I feel like comin g here was a good decision for my future,” Potter said.
If a career in golf doesn’t work out, he will be pursuing a career in finance.
