FGCU’s Kappa Alpha fraternity is hosting a pumpkin patch fundraiser for its national philanthropy, Muscular Dystrophy Association Oct. 27 to 28.
The fraternity brothers decided to bring out their cowboy boots and hats and play country music at the FGCU library lawn to host their first pumpkin patch ever.
Hunter Ward, the vice president of Kappa Alpha, said they decided to name the event the “Possum’s PumpKAn Patch.”
“This is an event that we’re going to start hosting every year,” Ward said. “Our chapter bought these pumpkins cheap.”
Lizzy Richmond, a member of the Phi Mu sorority, visited the pumpkin patch Tuesday morning.
“We as a sorority like to help support our IFC fraternities,” Richmond said.
According to its official page, MDA is a nonprofit agency dedicated to finding treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other neuromuscular diseases.
“Every dollar we get, we donate,” said Jacob Kalogridis, the designated pumpkin patch president of the fraternity.
The chapter bought 600 pumpkins that they will be selling to the FGCU community. The prices for the pumpkins are $5 for the small ones and $10 for the big ones.
The pumpkin patch will be available on campus from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
Regarding the leftover pumpkins, if any, Kalogridis said the fraternity is planning to donate them.
“We’re going to donate them to either Lee Memorial’s or San Carlos school,” Kalogridis said. “We haven’t decided yet where exactly.”
