The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon will be tabling on campus all week, accepting donations and selling bracelets — which say, “Make Miracles a Reality SigEp Strong for Dom” — to raise money for a former brother suffering from brain cancer.
“We’re tabling all week, and basically, we’ll be selling the bands as long as we can to help support one of our brothers, who has stage four brain cancer,” said Jason Finan, a junior and brother of the fraternity.
Dominic Cardenas, 21, a former member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, was recently diagnosed with stage four primary brain cancer. Cardenas was suffering from a headache that would not go away for about a week or two.
When he went to the doctors, they conducted a CT scan and an MRI of his head.
On Sept. 2, the results of the scans found that Cardenas had developed glioblastomas, which are highly malignant and aggressive tumors. Doctors predict that he has anywhere from nine months to six years to live.
“We’re doing a few different things to fundraise,” Finan said. “We had a GoFundMe, but the bands are our focus this week.”
The bands can be purchased for $3 a piece at the SigEp table all week, or you can donate any amount to the cause.
“The bands are pretty symbolic, not just in what they say, but the colors,” Finan said. “The grey represents brain cancer, the blue writing is Dom’s favorite color.
We’re trying to come together as an organization and support him and, hopefully, help support his treatment and the facility he is staying at.”
