Vice President Joe Biden is trying to stop the campus sexual violence epidemic in the United States.
Biden visited three college campuses earlier this week to talk about “It’s on Us,” a campaign that aims to shift the way Americans think and act about sexual assault on college campuses.
This week, Nov. 8 to 14, has been denominated the It’s on Us week of action since last year. This is why Biden traveled to Annapolis, Maryland, to participate in an It’s on Us roundtable at the United States Naval Academy on Monday, Nov. 9.
He also traveled to Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina, and Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, to deliver speeches about the issue.
Last year, the White House partnered with Generation Progress, a national organization that works with and for young people to promote solutions to political and social challenges, to launch the It’s on Us campaign. Colleges across the country have hosted several events to encourage students to take action to prevent sexual assault on campuses.
“Over the past year, we’ve gotten celebrities, major companies, sports leagues, and leading broadcasters to participate in public service announcements and display logos and information, showing how everyone can help prevent these heinous crimes from ever happening,” Biden said in an opinion piece he wrote that was released by the White House on Monday, Nov. 9.
Biden also encouraged students to demand that their universities be held accountable to the responsibility of stopping sexual violence.
“We have more to do to change the culture that asks the wrong questions like why were you there? What were you wearing? Were you drinking?” Biden said in the opinion piece.
