Money might not buy happiness, but can it buy the presidency? Donald Trump is one of the wealthiest people alive, and his race to become the Republican presidential nominee for the upcoming election is growing more suspenseful and horrifying by the day. Although Trump is a well-known businessman, author and television star, he is completely unqualified to become the 45th president of the United States, and it is very unlikely that he will ever be our commander in chief.
There is a degree of rationality and level-headedness that the president of the United States must have, one that Trump lacks.
“I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will have Mexico pay for that wall,” Trump said. “Mark my words.”
Trump does not take into account the long-term consequences of his extreme proposals, and he is ultimately out of control. His outrageous comments would put every country against the U.S., and Trump could start wars on every continent as a result of his chauvinism. He does not possess the tools to make America great again because his thinking is backwards. We live in a world where international relations are more crucial than ever, and our dealings with Latin America, the Middle East and Europe are vital for our interests and survival as a global power. Trump would alienate our country and put the rest of the world against us.
The future I envision for this county is not filled with new, violent wars and wasteful military spending; however, that is the path Trump would lead us down. Cooperation and integration is what will make America great again, not discord and isolation.
We need the support of the entire international community, but Trump’s position on several issues is regressive. His words ooze racism, disrespect and arrogance. Trump does not talk about building a strong country by addressing climate change, taking in refugees, ending wars (not beginning them), constructively contributing to the war on terror, paving progressive policies for immigration, fighting for women’s rights and ending racial profiling. These are all significant issues that a fit leader would address.
A recent press release from Trump stated: “Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”
Trump does not think before he speaks, and this is dangerous because he has already insulted Mexicans by demanding to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico and he has made numerous sexist remarks toward women. His most recent verbal attacks have targeted Muslims. At this rate, he will offend and anger every minority, race, nationality and ethnic group in the world. Mexicans, women and Muslims are just the beginning of his rampage, which is why it shocks me that he has any support at all. He is rude, careless, disrespectful and arrogant. Trump lacks experience in working as a government leader and in the lawmaking and political field.
Furthermore, he has never actually explained his proposals by describing specific policy steps. He uses vague statements and fails to explain how he actually plans on executing his plans. Progress cannot take place without compromise, and Trump is not willing to compromise. Our country will be in deadlock and at a standstill. I would never have a mechanic be my dentist or a farmer be my interior designer. Thus, why should Americans let an unqualified, rich businessman become the president?
Ultimately, whether you agree or disagree with my arguments of Trump being unfit to lead our nation for the next four years, it is crucial that you to register to vote and voice your opinion in the upcoming presidential election.
Many young people, especially college students, are not registered to vote, or they simply fail to participate in the elections. This is tragic because we will soon inherit this nation, and we must contribute to our country’s political future.
Young people make up a large portion of the population, and we have the potential to be very influential in the approaching election.
We are a generation of innovators and change seekers, so we must take part in shaping this country to fit our vision of equality, freedom, diversity and progress. This begins with registering to vote and casting your ballot on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016.
