The Black Student Alliance held a protest on Tuesday February 2nd regarding comments of last week’s Student Government meeting revising the “Melanin Week” bill.

“The Black Student Alliance is holding a peaceful demonstration in protest of the language used during last week’s SG senate meeting.”

The BSA posted a message on their Instagram Sunday night, informing and educating people of the organized demonstration and why it would take place.
The post went over the remarks that were made at the senate meeting and continued on to say, “These kinds of remarks are why we have to march and protest for the equality and respect our people deserve on campus.”
The peaceful demonstration took place at the Veteran’s Pavilion, on the library lawn at 4 PM.
SG Chief of Staff, Nathan Campbell, spoke on why he was there and what we as a community can do.

“I was frustrated. And I still am. I’m still frustrated. I don’t understand how I can go into the office every morning, and then someone who works with me every day, can go into that senate meeting and say that I don’t matter. That people like me don’t matter. So, I ask myself, what do we do next? Well, the first step is to educate ourselves. Understand the black culture. Black history. Understand black excellence. And why it’s important. The next step is to empower those people and put them in power.”

Many students and SG members alike came to show their support and listen to what the speakers had to say.
Every speaker seemed to emphasize the same basic message. Do better for your community. 
Student senate member, Gervais Baptiste, spoke passionately about the demonstration as well.

“Because let’s be honest, if we didn’t like this school we wouldn’t be out here. And if we didn’t care about our communities, and didn’t care about the people that we walk these halls with, we wouldn’t be out here.”
