Since the start of the semester, internet connection issues have been common around FGCU’s campus.
Both of the school’s networks, fgcu-campus and the eduroam system, have been sluggish when browsing the internet, which has caused issues for some students.
“The Wi-Fi during the first week of school was very poor, it could take an hour or so for some assignments to load or submit. Recently though, the Wi-Fi has been pretty good, and I currently have had no problems getting to my work,” freshman Isabelle Northington said.
According to Information Technology Services (ITS), the school invested $1 million to upgrade the Wi-Fi system this past summer to enhance student user experience. However, the transition from one system to another has been anything but smooth.
“We have made several adjustments to the system and continue to monitor performance. While we have seen positive results, our team continues to work diligently to ensure that all issues are resolved and the system meets expectations,” ITS said.
Some students could not connect to important websites, such as Canvas, Gulfline and Outlook.
“It was so bad. I only used my phone hotspot and my iPad for the first two weeks. The school sent out an email briefly and it sort of fixed itself the next day,” freshman Nomie Charles said. “It’s been running really smooth, but lately it’s kind of slow again. The gaming console Wi-Fi was down last week, and honestly, I can deal on my other devices, but I’ve been using data on my phone for most others.”
According to ITS, most of the connection issues affecting the school should be fixed as the semester continues. If students need any help with the internet, or with any other tech-related issues, they can reach the IT Help Desk by either submitting a ticket online here or by meeting them in person in the library.
