The No. 22-ranked Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team took down conference foe USC Upstate Saturday afternoon 75-59 at the Hodge Center in Spartansburg, S.C.
The win extended the Eagles win streak to 20 and gave head coach Karl Smesko his 400th career win. The Eagles are now 25-2 on the season and 12-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Smesko managed to accomplish the feat in just 493 games with a win percentage of .811. It took one of the greatest coaches of all time, UConn’s Geno Auriemma, 495 games to reach the milestone.
The Eagles were lead by Whitney Knight, who scored 26 points with eight rebounds and three blocks. FGCU also used a strong shooting game to defeat the Spartans going 45.8 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from 3-pt territory.
The Eagles travel to Jacksonville Wednesday night to take on the Ospreys of North Florida at 7 p.m. at UNF Arena and the game will be on ESPN3. FGCU beat UNF at home on Jan. 14, 75-42, with Knight and Taylor Gradinjan both scoring 17 points.
