Nothing but a ‘G’ thing

Student finds passion for photography at FGCU

If you find Guillermo Fernandez on campus, you’ll probably catch him with a camera in hand. The Florida Gulf Coast University junior originally planned on a career in law, but after realizing a life behind a desk wasn’t for him, he found a new path in photography.
“I’m a people person,” Fernandez said. “Photography is really about people.”
Fernandez began taking pictures when Hurricane Katrina tore through his hometown of Miami in 2005. It was during this time his love of photography blossomed. His first pictures were taken with his mother’s digital camera. In 2005 digital camera technology was just hitting the market and after his first taste, he became infatuated with photography.
Fernandez, or G as he ‘s known at FGCU, cleaned up Katrina’s debris to earn money for his first camera.
Fast-forward to 2011 — Fernandez majored in business management at FGCU. Once he became an Eagle he bought an underwater point and shoot and began snapping pictures every chance he could. His friends loved his pictures, often using them as their profile pictures on Facebook. With the endless support of his friends, which he says is still one of his biggest motivators; Fernandez pursued his passion for photography.
Most days, Fernandez snaps pictures on and off campus. He is the owner of G Photography and partners DGD Media, which handles websites, video, photography, and social media.
Ever since his adoration for photography pushed him to work through the wreckage of Hurricane Katrina to earn his first camera, Fernandez has continued to excel as a photographer and chase his passion.
“I feel like this path found me and I definitely will be creating content whether is photos or videos,” Fernandez said. “I just like making people say, ‘wow.’”
