Anyone who has followed college basketball in the past few years may know the name Sherwood Brown or at least know about the basketball star who sported dreadlocks, his signature look during the reign of the Cinderella story that was FGCU in the 2013 NCAA Sweet.
Brown is an FGCU superstar, becoming the first FGCU player to score  1000 points and grab 500 rebounds in his career.
Brown played a big role in helping establish the name Dunk City for Fort Myers,  playing for the FGCU men’s basketball team  FGCU all four years of his college career,  helping bring the school tonational attention. Brown started off his first year playing for the Eagles by only starting for five games, but he left this campus as a Florida Gulf Coast champion.
Brown came to FGCU from Olympia High School in Orlando, with one dream— to play college basketball.  Brown graduated from FGCU with multiple awards, one of the more prestigious awards being the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week award in 2012 and the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year award in 2013. Brown had an incredible track record with the Atlantic Sun division, scoring 16 points and bringing in 11 rebounds to help Florida Gulf Coast win its first ever A-Sun title and its first career NCAA Tournament appearance in the school’s second year.
In the 2013 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament, Brown finished the game scoring 24 points and grabbing 9 rebounds, leading the Eagles to a 78–68 win over No. 2 Georgetown. This was the first time the nation began to recognize Fort Myers, and the term “Dunk City” was coined.
The No. 15 seeded Eagles made history by beating No. 7  San Diego State 81–71, and FGCU got more attention than ever before. It marked the first time a No. 15 seed reached the Sweet 16. Brown scored 17 points and added 8 rebounds in the contest. Brown’s final game was against the Florida Gators, where the Eagles’ Cinderella run ended, but the name of Sherwood Brown became immortal among the student body at FGCU.
Now that his college basketball career has come to an end, Brown continues to play basketball as a professional,  domestically for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League and internationally in foreign territory overseas.
Brown went undrafted in the 2013 NBA draft, but on July 17, 2013, he signed a one-year deal (with the option of a second) with Maccabi Haifa of the Israeli Basketball Premier League. Currently, however, Brown is signed with the Red Claws. When he is not in Maine playing basketball, he has an apartment on the east side of Orlando where he likes to relax, and enjoy spending time with his friends and family. Brown makes an effort to visit FGCU at least once a semester. His name still maintains significance at the university.
