The FGCU Eagles Men’s Basketball team defeated Eastern Kentucky 77-73 Thursday night at Alico Arena.

Despite a 13-6 run by FGCU to take a 72-61 lead with 3 minutes left in the game, the finish came down to the final possessions. EKU was able to mount a run of their own to pull within 3 points with 20 seconds left on the clock.

FGCU started the first half strong and led 36-28. After the half, the Eagles struggled to find a rhythm. This allowed EKU to take their first lead of the game, which they controlled for much of the middle of the second half.

Austin Richie’s 18 points in the second half was the difference in the final of this game. Richie was 4-6 on 3PT shots during the second half and made both free throws he attempted.

Kevin Samuel recorded 14 rebounds and 3 blocks throughout the game to give the Eagles the stops on defense they needed. Samuel also put up 18 points offensively.

The FGCU Men’s Basketball team will face Bellarmine in their next game this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Alico Arena. Bellarmine comes in with a 12-9 record against FGCU’s 13-8 record, which should provide a tight matchup.
