The FGCU men’s soccer team continued their season with a match against the Keiser University Seahawks at the Pickering Field at the FGCU Soccer Complex on Wednesday, Oct. 2. The green and blue picked up its second win, outscoring the Seahawks 6-1.
At the start of the first period, the Eagles quickly attacked Keiser University Seahawks. Sophomore midfielder Leo Schorr made five shots on goal before scoring the team’s first goal 18 minutes into the period.
Keiser University made two shots on goal before the game was paused for a lightning delay. After the delay, both teams quickly ramped up their aggressiveness with the Eagles getting a foul, which awarded the Seahawks a free kick.
The Seahawks got two corner kicks on goal, both blocked by the Eagle’s goalie, Cooper Blay. The Eagles then got a second goal for the first period, this time by freshman midfielder Lucas Sperner with an assist from sophomore defender Samuel Maraver.
The first half ended with the Eagles staying ahead of Keiser, scoring 2-0.
The second half kicked off with a shot from Keiser, which sailed over the Eagle’s net. Keiser then got a second kick, which was saved by Blay, and rebounded to freshman forward Manu Cordeviola, making the score 2-1, with the Eagles still in the lead.
FGCU scored their third goal of the game, with a shot from junior midfielder Alon Drey, with an assist from Sperner. Graduate student forward Cao Chaves scored the Eagles’ next goal minutes later to put them up 4-1.
The Eagles scored two more goals ending the matchup in a 2-1 affair. One of these goals was by junior midfielder Stanley Bazelais who scored his first career goal at the 85-minute mark.
“It was beautiful,” Bazelais said. “First career goal is something that you will always remember. I practiced a lot of hours, week after week, that’s all it is, you know, putting the work in.”
FGCU has struggled to put up goals this season, as they have only scored four through seven games. They were able to have a breakout game against Keiser University scoring six goals through 90 minutes.
“We played some games, we didn’t score goals, so that was a challenge, but I think we’re getting stronger,” Head Coach Jesse Cormier said. “I was proud of the guys tonight to score six, and I think we’re working in a way where we’re working as we go.”
FGCU will return to the Pickering Field against the University of North Florida on Saturday, Oct. 5 to continue conference play.
