FGCU’s women’s soccer team continued their season in a match against the University of North Alabama Lions at the Pickering Field at the FGCU Soccer Complex on Friday, Oct. 17. The Eagles earned their eighth win, outscoring the Lions 3-0.
At the beginning of the first period, both teams started trading shots on goal, before senior midfielder Katharina Oelschlaeger scored the Eagles’ first goal in the eighth minute of the period.
The Eagles seemed invigorated after this goal, as they were able to keep pressure on their opponent’s goal.
Junior forward Kendal Gargiula scored FGCU’s second goal of the game, with assists by Oelschlaeger and sophomore forward Maya Henley Buisan, to make the score 2-0. After this second goal, both teams continued to trade shots on goal until the end of the first period, with the score standing at 2-0 Eagles.
The second half continued like the first with both teams seemingly at a standstill, with the two taking the ball out of bounds, resulting in many throw-ins. This continued for a few minutes, until FGCU scored its third goal of the game by Gargiula, for the final goal of the night, making the score 3-0.
After the Eagles’ third goal, both teams continued to trade shots, while the Eagles earned many free kicks from fouls by the Lions. The Eagles also earned two yellow cards, while shots by the Lions were blocked by sophomore goalie Olivia Molina.
The game’s final score at the end of the second period was 3-0, with the Eagles taking the win.
“I thought we played really well, scored some phenomenal goals,” FGCU coach Jim Blankenship said. “The important thing is that we’re at this stage where getting points is important, I felt our play and possession stuff was really good, I like the energy of the group.”
FGCU returns to Pickering Field against the University of Central Arkansas on Sunday, Oct. 20 to dictate the No.1 seed of the ASUN Conference.
