FGCU faced the 18th ranked team in the Nation and lost by 10.
The Eagles seemed to never fade away completely, even when the game threatened to get ugly time and time again. Just when fans thought the game was out of reach, the Eagles would go on a run to bring the game back.
You could also see signs of the old Dunk City as the Eagles punched the ball through the rim on several occasions. FGCU’s Zach Johnson and Texas A&M’s Jalen Jones were impact players on both sides of the floor.
Johnson recorded 13 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists. However, the clear star of the game was Jalen Jones. He doc’d 22 points and 7 rebounds. Commendable performances go to FGCU’s Demetris Morant with 8 points and 9 rebounds, Christian Terell with 14 points, and Reggie Reed with 8 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds.
Looking at the team stat comparison, both teams were even across the spectrum. Both teams shot the ball evenly, rebounded evenly, and played defense evenly. Nevertheless, the separation was clear in how long Texas A&M held the lead by double digits. They also got to the free throw line almost twice as many times as FGCU. FGCU could never completely close the gap.
Unfortunately, FGCU didn’t make enough plays to bring themselves back into the game. FGCU forced 21 turnovers as compared to Texas A&M’s 10. Even though both team’s average possession time was close to 16 seconds a piece, Texas A&M made the most of their possessions.
The Eagles needed more out of their starting stars. Norelia recorded a low 4 points and 1 rebound, DeBose had 2 points and Cvjecticanin, the major deep threat for the Eagles, had only 3 points.
