On Thursday, Casey Coleman, FGCU’s first Major League Baseball player, was one of five who signed with the Seattle Mariners.
Coleman, who was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2008, spent last season with the Omaha Chasers, the Kansas City Royals’ minor league affiliate, where he went 5-4 with 54 strikeouts and a 4.92 ERA. In four seasons with the Cubs and the Royals, Coleman has gone 8-13 in Major League starts with a 5.72 ERA.
Coleman, a graduate and former player for Mariner High School in Cape Coral, Florida, joins another graduate and former player of Mariner High School, Mike Zunino.
Although Coleman did not receive an invite to the Mariners’ spring training after signing a one-year minor league contract, he will hope to make an impact with its Triple-A team, the Tacoma Rainers, and eventually earn a spot on the Mariners roster.
