Cohen Center and Sugden Hall left in the dark

Every individual who was inside the Cohen Center and Sugden Hall was left in the dark this afternoon. The FGCU buildings were completely evacuated due to a power outage.

The buildings are closed down, all doors are locked and FGCU employees are standing outside the buildings, prohibiting anyone to enter the building. The employees who work in the dining locations are sitting outside of the building as well.
The University Police Department responded to the scene, including the Florida Power and Light Company. UPD doesn’t currently have anyone available in the office to talk about what is happening on campus. However, an email was sent at 3:56 p.m. to all students from Chief Steven Moore, director of Public safety in the University Police Department.
Moore said the power outage happened because a vehicle hit a transformer.
“No estimate has been given yet on how long the power could be out,” Moore wrote in the email.
Confused students are standing outside both buildings, trying to re-schedule whatever their original plans were.
“I wanted to get lunch with my friends, it’s hot outside and I don’t know what’s going on,” said Julian Allen, undetermined major freshman. “It’s locked.”
Omar Longoria was in his Intro to Hospitality class when the outage took place.
“We took a ten-minute break and we were going to continue class, but when I came back the school officer was there and he was evacuating everyone from the building and classrooms,” Longoria said.
A second email from Moore sent at 4:19 p.m. to the FGCU community said the Office of Registrar is working on relocating classes from Sugden Hall to other locations this evening. Campus Reservations will also be contacting anyone who had meetings scheduled tonight in the buildings. Garage 1 has also been closed.
FGCU staff members outside of the buildings refused to comment on the issue.
[UPDATE Monday 8:37 p.m.]
A third email from Moore Monday night at 8p.m. stated that although the Cohen Center and Garage 1 would be open Tuesday for normal operations, Sudgen Hall could remain closed on Tuesday.
“Sudgen Hall will be closed Tuesday due to new wiring that needs to be run from the transformer to the building,” Moore said in an email.
Both the Cohen Center and Garage 1 has power routed through another transformer. The Office of the Registrar will be working to relocate all 18 classes scheduled for Sudgen to other buildings, that information will be provided when available.
