Suchy selected by Pirates in fifth round of the 2014 MLB Draft

Junior outfielder Michael Suchy became the first FGCU baseball player off the board in the 2014 MLB Draft on Friday, as he was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth round with the 161st pick.

Suchy is the 20th player in the program’s 12-year history to be drafted and the second-highest selection behind 2010 Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year Chris Sale. He is the seventh FGCU player to be selected in the top 10 rounds.

This season, the junior posted a .318 batting average to go with 76 hits, 54 runs, 16 doubles, four triples, eight homeruns and a career-best and team-high 49 RBI to help guide FGCU to its fourth A-Sun Regular Season Championship. His season earned him spots on the Atlantic Sun All-Conference First Team and All-Academic Team.

For his career Suchy hit .291 over 162 games with a slugging percentage of .440 on the strength of 171 hits while producing 27 doubles, five triples, 17 homeruns and 101 RBI. He also walked 58 times, built an on-base percentage of .366 and stole 22 of 32 bases while maintaining a .981 fielding percentage with 12 assists and 341 put-outs.
