Alex Diaz, a former shortstop on the FGCU baseball team, was killed in a car crash early Friday morning, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.
According to Miami-Dade, Diaz was traveling west on SW 42 st. in his hometown of Miami in a Dodge Ram truck at a high speed when he lost control of the vehicle. The truck crashed into a concrete pillar at a home off of 42 st. Diaz was reported dead upon the arrival of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Diaz, 24, started all 56 games he played for FGCU during his last season on the team, holding a .954 career fielding percentage. According to the Athletics Department, Diaz graduated from FGCU with a degree in criminal justice.
He is survived by his parents, Sindo and Nikki Diaz, and his younger sister Ashley.
“We’re saddened to report the death of former Eagle Alex Diaz,” a tweet from the FGCU baseball team’s Twitter account read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all those affected.”
The cause of the crash has not yet been revealed.
