After a victory over Michigan and a draw against Michigan State, the FGCU Men’s Soccer team (1-0-1) is ranked No. 18 in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll.
The impressive performances come away from home with the games at Michigan and Michigan State. Senior midfielder Ryan Medilah led the way for the Eagles against Michigan by scoring a hat trick and assisting senior midfielder Ivan Rosales to score the fourth goal in a decisive 4-3 win.
In the game against Michigan State, Rosales converted a crucial penalty kick in the 89th minute, but Michigan State would respond with a penalty kick of their own in the 90th minute to force overtime.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Gustavo Vasconcelos also played well, making six saves with two of those coming in the final 10 minutes against Michigan and recording three saves against Michigan State.
Medilah was honored with ASUN Player of the Week by the ASUN, National Player of the Week by College Soccer News and was included in the Men’s Soccer Team of the Week by topdrawersoccer.com.
The win against Michigan gave the men’s soccer team their first victory over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 8 UCF in 2011.
Following their strong start to the season on the road, the men’s soccer team will return home to play Seton Hall this Friday, September 6 at 7 p.m.
