Florida Gulf Coast University student Brian Alexander was in a car accident that put him into critical condition April 16. On April 21, FGCU chief of staff Susan Evans unofficially confirmed his death.
Alexander, a 23-year-old nursing major, was just a few weeks from graduating with a bachelor’s of science nursing degree. Just after 2 a.m. Friday, his car hit a guardrail on Immokalee Road and flipped into a canal. He was reportedly underwater for 10 minutes before being rescued by Collier County deputies and transported to North Collier Hospital. According to his GoFundMe page, which was created to help Alexander’s family pay for medical expenses, he was driving home from a 12-hour shift at the hospital.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his friends at this time of tragedy and sorrow,” Evans wrote in an email.
Sheri Chanel, creator of Alexander’s GoFundMe page, describes Alexander as a “hard working person with an amazing sense of humor who strives to keep us all laughing and smiling.” As of 9 p.m. April 21, the page had raised $1,110 for Alexander’s family.
Alexander’s GoFundMe page is still live, and donations can be made to help his family with medical, funeral and other outstanding costs.
