Women’s golf competes in the Mid-American Match Play Challenge

The FGCU women’s golf team traveled to Lakewood Ranch on Monday, Feb. 8 to play in the two-day Mid-American Match Play Challenge. The sixth-seeded Eagles split the two matches played on in the first day of competition, defeating 11th-seed Central Michigan University and losing to third-seeded University of Akron.
Senior Sara Detlefsen was the only Eagle to earn a win in both rounds. Detlefsen led against CMU’s Natalie Johnson the entire first match, winning by four. In the second match, Detlefsen faced Akron’s Frida Fougberg and defeated her by two holes.
The Eagles went 5-0 against Central Michigan, with wins coming from Madison Easterbrook, Mei Khuan Yong, Megan Blonien and Madeline Marck-Sherk. Freshman Marck-Sherk won by the biggest margin in the first round, defeating Holly Hines by six.
“I am really proud of the way we played this morning,” Head Coach Sarah Trew told FGCU Athletics. “It was really neat to see us get off to such a hot start and win all of our matches.”
Unfortunately for the Eagles, the big win from the morning did not carry over to the second round of the day against Akron. FGCU lost to the Zips with a score of 3-1-1 — the only win coming from Detlefsen and a tie coming from Marck-Sherk.
“This afternoon, we struggled a little bit more,” Trew said. “Sara was really solid for us and won both of our matches. Even though Maddie lost one, she still shot even par, and I am extremely proud of her battling back and almost pulling off the match.”
Day two of the Mid-American Match continued Tuesday, Feb. 9. The Eagles took on Western Michigan in the third round of the tournament and won with a score of 3-1. But, again, FGCU could not continue to win in the final round of the day against Bowling Green State. The Eagles were shutout 4-0.
The Eagles will come back home this week where they will host the Eagle Invite from Feb. 12 to 14 at the Stoneybrook Country Club.
