Atwater pursues more after graduation

After being named to the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Conference First Team, receiving the A-Sun Player of the Week twice, FGCU’s Northwest Mutual Student-Athlete of the Month and earning the title of Newcomer of the Year after transferring from VCU, it is hard to imagine Kaneisha Atwater would have any time for school. However, the 5-foot-7-inch guard from Fort Pierce has big aspirations after graduation day.

Graduating with a degree in criminal justice, Atwater has always had interest in the criminal system. Yet, more than being interested in the criminal system, Atwater also has a weakness for something more.

“I have a soft spot for kids,” Atwater said. “I’ve always wanted to work with kids and care for kids, so working with troubled kids in the criminal system has always been a dream of mine.”

Atwater gets hands-on experience with troubled children, as she is currently interning at Acceleration Middle Charter School in Fort Myers. This internship has assisted Atwater in really determining that working with kids in the system is truly what she wants to do in the future.

Beyond the criminal justice degree, Atwater also plans on getting her master’s.

“I plan on getting my master’s in social work after I graduate from FGCU,” Atwater said. “I love working with kids, but I also have a passion for criminal justice.”

Even though Atwater hopes to continue her basketball career after college, for now, she looks forward to receiving her degree and beginning the process of earning her master’s.
