Police Beat: dead kittens, stolen laundry and people living in tents

Help turning lights on
A complainant called UPD and requested a UPD officer at 8:09 p.m. April 12 and asked for help turning on the lights on the recreation field in South Village. The complainant said the lacrosse team needed to practice at the field. UPD notified the person on call from the Physical Plant.
Stolen laundry
A complainant called UPD at 9:29 p.m. April 13 and reported her laundry had been stolen. She said the burglar took her possessions from the laundry room in Biscayne Hall in South Village. The housing administrator on call was unable to view the security cameras, so the UPD officer left a note for the morning crew.
Bleeding nose
UPD received a medical call from the blood mobile on campus at 10:40 a.m. April 14. The blood mobile said a male individual had donated blood and then fainted in the parking lot in front of McTarnaghan Hall. The patient hit his nose on the ground and was bleeding. UPD contacted the patient’s parents, and his father picked him up from campus.
Tank full of water
A complainant walked into the police department at 12:28 p.m. April 14 to report some damage done to his car while it was parked in Parking Garage 3. The complainant said he parked his car at 4 p.m. April 13 and when he came back at 8 p.m. that same day, someone had left a note on his car that explained that 40 ounces of water had been poured into his gas tank. The complainant said he had been driving his car back and forth from Naples, and the car was fine. He just wanted to report the incident.
Lost keys
A complainant called UPD at 2:50 p.m. April 14 to report his car keys were missing from his backpack. He said he had left his backpack in a locker that had no lock at the gym beside Alico Arena while he was exercising. However, when he was about to leave, he noticed his keys were missing. He refused to file a theft report but told a UPD officer that he would leave his car in the parking area in front of Alico Arena until he found his spare keys.
Roommate prank
A complainant called UPD at 9:04 p.m. April 14 and said he believed someone had broken into his room in Flamingo Building in West Lake Village while he was gone. The student said there were threatening messages on his mirror. The complainant’s roommates came forward at 11:34 p.m. and said they had broken into his roommate’s room using a credit card without permission. The roommates then wrote on the bathroom mirrors, “we know — anonymous” and “either you do it or get it done to you, know what I mean RIP sandman.” The complainant spoke to his roommates, and they all agreed it was a joke. However, UPD forwarded the case to Housing so they can hold a judicial hearing for the intruders.
Illicit tent on campus
A complainant called UPD at 7:55 a.m. April 15 to report a tent pitched on the west side of the Egan Observatory on campus. The complainant said the tent had been there for the past two days, and it appeared as if someone was living in it. A UPD officer checked the tent and found an individual living in it who claimed to be working on a science project. UPD told the individual in the tent that she had to leave since it was on university property without permission.
Harassment claim
A complainant called Lee County 911 at 12:43 p.m. April 15 to report that he was being threatened by another individual on campus. Lee County called UPD, and a UPD officer went to the scene. The officer spoke to the complainant who claimed his aggressor had taken a video of him, and he felt threatened. The officer also talked to the other individual, who claimed to have only taken a photo. The officer deliberated that nothing illegal had taken place and told Dean of Students Michelle Yovanovich about the situation.
Broken window
An individual called UPD at 9:33 p.m. April 15 and said her neighbor had broken her window in Building G in North Lake Village. A UPD officer investigated the scene and found out the complainant’s neighbor was arguing on the phone with his girlfriend. He then became angry and punched the window. The neighbor will be put through the student conduct process and will have to pay for the repair.
Bitten tongue
A concerned mother called UPD at 9:34 p.m. to request a welfare check on her son, who lives in Panther Building in West Lake Village. The mother said she had been on the phone with him, and he told her didn’t feel well. Then, he screamed, and the line cut out. She hadn’t been able to contact him. A UPD officer contacted the student, who said he had bit his tongue and dropped the phone. The officer asked that he call his mother to explain.
Dead kittens
A staff member from the Aquatics Center on campus called UPD at 10 a.m. April 16 to report a dead kitten on the FGCU Lake Parkway East. A UPD officer checked the scene and found there were two dead kittens. The officer then called the Physical Plant.
Suspicious incident
A complainant called UPD at 10:25 a.m. April 16 and said there were three trash bags taped to the door frame and a traffic cone on the floor blocking the exit of her dorm. The phrases “and then there were three” and “voce deve olhar para o quarto” were written on the bags. The latter one is Portuguese for “you should look at the room.” The complainant said she and her roommates are all on the softball team and have no issues with anyone. The UPD officer forwarded the case to Housing, until the softball coach called UPD at 12:25 p.m. and said two softball players confessed to being involved in the incident as a prank. The coach said that the situation would be handled in house through FGCU Athletics.
Illegal fishing
The library circulation desk called UPD at 2:36 p.m. April 17 and reported a male and a female were fishing in the lake in front of the library. A UPD officer checked the scene and talked to the individuals. They said they didn’t know they couldn’t fish on campus, and the officer told them not to do it.
