Recently graduated FGCU standout, Austin Schultz has been named the men’s golf program’s new assistant coach.
Schultz led FGCU in scoring average and finished runner-up at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship his 2015-16 senior season.
“I’m thankful to coach Booker for giving me this opportunity,” Schultz said. “I’m looking forward to working with our returning players and our newcomers. It will definitely be a little different going from playing to coaching, but I think my experience as a former student-athlete at FGCU will certainly be a great benefit.”
Schultz finished as an Eagle with a 75.04 scoring average over 53 rounds, posted 11 par-or-better showings and had six rounds in the 60’s.
More than a excelling on the course, Schultz was also named the ASUN Men’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2016 – the first member in program history to earn the honor. He was also named to the ASUN All-Academic Team and was the ASUN Men’s Golfer of the Week on Apr. 7.
Well-respected Schultz finished in the top 25 in every tournament except one last year. He also finished the year with 80 birdies, the 14th-most in single-season program history.
At the ASUN Championship, Schultz played three consistent rounds of 73-73-72 to finish second in the field of 77 golfers.
Embodying the student-athlete mold perfectly, Schultz will be an ideal fit for the program’s new assistant coach position, hoping to bring experience both on and off the golf course.
