The FGCU men’s basketball program has added former Texas Tech point guard C.J. Williamson for the 2016-2017 season.
Williamson will sit out the 2016-17 season per NCAA transfer rules, but will have three years of eligibility beginning as a redshirt sophomore in 2017-18.
“We’re excited that C.J. is part of the program. I know it will be tough for him to sit out, but it will be good that he has a year to learn the system,” stated FGCU head coach Joe Dooley.
Williamson played in 21 games for Texas Tech last year as a freshman, averaging 1.7 points per game. He also posted a season-high six points in only 12 minutes of action against West Virginia.
Last year, Williamson received a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament under head coach Tubby Smith with a team that went 19-13.
In high school, Williamson was a 4-star recruit and helped guide his high school, Evans, to the Class 7A State Final as a sophomore and Class 8A State Final as a junior.
Williamson finished his career at Evans as the second-leading scorer behind former NBA All-Star Darryl Dawkins with 1,106 points. He averaged 15.1 points, 6.2 assists and 3.1 steals per game as a senior before earning All-Metro Conference honors and First Team All-Area.
Now with the addition of Williamson, nine of FGCU’s 15 players are from Florida and are bringing some of the best talent back to the state.
