The FGCU men’s basketball team (4-14; 1-2 ASUN) lost its first road conference game of the season to the University of North Florida (10-8; 3-0 ASUN) by a score of 89-74, Thursday night.
Wajid Aminu scored the first basket of the game for UNF, and the Ospreys would never look back, leading for the entire game.
It was a game of runs in the first half, and whenever the Eagles would get within striking distance of tying the game, UNF would make a three-point shot to regain its comfortable margin.
With 4:56 left to play in the first half, Caleb Catto converted a jumper to bring FGCU within four points of UNF at 33-29, but this is the closest the Eagles would get to the Ospreys lead for the rest of the game, as the Ospreys closed out the half on a 9-2 run to lead 42-31 at halftime.
Most of the second half, UNF expressed a comfortable double-digit lead over FGCU off of the back of their hot shooting. However, just under two minutes left in the game, the Ospreys had managed to build their lead up to a 21-point margin.
The Eagles used a flurry of six points, led by Catto scoring one basket and assisting two alley-oops
North Florida shot 16-31 as a team on three-pointers for the game, while FGCU shot 8-14 on three-pointers for the game. This comes after the Eagles held Lipscomb to 8-27 on three-point shots and Liberty to 5-16 on three-point shots.
“Our message today was having to get UNF out of their comfort zone because you know they are going to hit a ton of threes,” said head coach Michael Fly. “They capitalized on some mistakes of ours tonight with run-out threes, which certainly impacted momentum. On top of that, we didn’t do a good job of making a lot of the tough plays to get them uncomfortable enough to break their offensive rhythm.”
Up next for FGCU men’s basketball is a trip to DeLand, Florida to play Stetson University on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
