The FGCU softball team (4-1) was handed their first loss of the season Sunday, as the University of Connecticut (3-2) beat them by a score of 7-3.
“It was a really solid weekend but I don’t think we really hit on all cylinders today,” said head coach David Deiros. “We came out as tournament champions with a 4-1 record and had some chances in today’s game, but we let it slip away in the middle innings.”
After a scoreless first inning, UConn used the top of the second to score four runs on three hits and an error by FGCU. In the bottom of the third, the Eagles got on the board as Johneisha Row scored from second on a wild pitch.
UConn would go on to tack on one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to increase their lead and bring the score up to 7-1.
The Eagles were able to get back in the game when Mikenzie Vaughn drove a line drive over the left field wall, putting UConn’s lead at four. Hope Hernandez led the inning off with a single that would eventually lead to Vaughn’s two-run homer.
Marissa Mesiemore suffered her first loss of the 2020 season, as her record now sits at 2-1. Mesiemore gave up four runs on three hits, adding one strikeout to her line over four innings.
The next matchup for the FGCU softball team will come when they take on Furman on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. to kick off the FGCU Invitational.
