Presidential hopeful Ben Carson has a lot of explaining to do after recent comments relating to Muslims last week. The GOP’s second runner-up joins celebrity greats such as Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Cosby in letting the young voters down by blaming “Political correctness culture” for their not being able to say racist or enabling things in their material/daily conversations. What sets Carson apart from the other two, however, is that he holds in his future the potential to run this nation.
In an interview with “Meet the Press,” Carson suggested that the Constitution does not accommodate a Muslim to ever be in the White House.
“I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation,” Carson said. “I do not agree with that.”
His inflammatory remarks sparked outrage among social media; Carson singled out Islam as being unconstitutional and, in doing so, may have cost himself a large chunk of votes.
I’m not sure what got lost along the line here, but Carson forgot one crucial element about America: We are a nation built first and foremost on religious equality and immigration. Not only do Muslims have the right to run for president, but any person with any religious background has the opportunity to lead our nation because this is America, dammit.
Carson goes on to say that PC culture is the result of people being too offended. But if there’s something offensive being said, shouldn’t there be some sort of check system?
“The PC culture says whenever you’re asked a question, it has to be answered a certain way,” Carson said. “And if you don’t answer it that way, then, you know, let’s attack. And let’s not try to actually understand what a person’s saying — let’s just attack, attack, attack. And hopefully everybody else will look at that, and they will realize they are never supposed to say something like that again.”
Almost a week later, Carson was also quoted telling NASCAR fans that having a Confederate flag flown at NASCAR events was OK. Considering the political climate involved with the flag, Carson might want to reconsider what the problem is, him or PC culture?
