FGCU celebrated Adaptive Recreation Month on Thursday, Oct. 15.
The events were organized by Campus Recreation, the Office of Adaptive Services, the Rehabilitation Sciences Department in the College of Health Professions and Social Work and the Office of Service Learning and Civic Engagement.
The day featured five different activities that aimed to illustrate the struggles people with disabilities go through.
Adaptive paddling took place from 10 a.m. to noon at the FGCU Waterfront.
From 2 to 3 p.m. blindfold yoga was practiced at the Rec Center Group Fitness Studio.
Goal ball, a soccer-like game where players move around on their hands and knees blindfolded while pushing a ball with a bell inside with the objective of scoring in the opposing team’s goals, was held from 4 to 6 p.m.
A game of wheelchair basketball took place immediately after the goal ball matches ended from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Alico Arena Auxiliary Gym.
The last sports activity was adaptive softball, where students with disabilities played, held in the FGCU Softball Complex, from 7 to 9 p.m. Members of the FGCU official softball team and the sports club attended this activity.
“We kept score, but it was in a non-competitive environment,” said Chad Caldwell, facilities coordinator for Campus Recreation.
