Campus smoking regulations are fine as is

By Jenna Cobb

I am writing to voice my opinion on the notion of banning smoking here on campus, based on the Eagle News article, “Campus smoking ban is illogical” that ran on Oct. 31.
Many people at the university feel that smoking should in fact be banned on campus completely. Personally, I disagree with this notion.
Our current solution to the issue is a happy medium between the two sides, even though people are continually fighting for one way or the other. By keeping the designated areas, it allows people who do smoke the freedom to do so while also keeping it restricted. Students who do not want to be around secondhand smoke can find ways to go around the designated areas.
Speaking as a student here at Florida Gulf Coast University who does not smoke, I understand that we need to consider both sides to the argument. A ban of all smoking on campus would not be the answer to this issue considering the negative reciprocations it would entail. I propose that we move the designated smoking areas farther out of the walkways. This may give a more positive outlook on the issue for everyone. People would still be able to smoke on campus while also keeping it out of highly-populated areas.
Here at FGCU, we need to be considerate of everyone’s needs, wants and opinions in order to have an orderly, functional environment.
