Lack of class availability is financially strenuous

By Elizabeth Burgess Senior, communication
I am writing in response to the “Of course it’s not available” article that ran on Oct. 31 addressing the everso- frustrating issue of Florida Gulf Coast University’s course availability problem. I say this is a problem because it has become a frequent topic among my peers and myself.
I would first like to say that I have and had many family members that work for a university and/or school system, and feel that I have a better understanding of the pressure and all of the work it takes to make classes available to students. I realize that it is a process and it is far from simple.
However, I do believe that this is a growing issue at the university that needs to be addressed, especially with all of the great press FGCU has received in the past year.
The shortage of class availability in most of the colleges here at FGCU causes students and parents financial strain. Having to stay an extra semester or even all summer to wait and take only one class that is offered in the fall is upsetting on many levels.
This is not just a financial expense — it is the value of time, which we all know is very precious. I almost feel as if students are unintentionally being punished.
Life happens, things change and it is unfair that large amount of students have to worry if a class will be available in the upcoming semester.
I hope the university will work to improve its “lack of availability” issue in the future so there will be fewer frustrated Eagles.
