Student Government as a whole acting selfishly

By Jared Heidt, Junior, political science
I am writing in response to the Oct. 23 article “SG: The Great Divide.” To a student such as myself who has no connection to the Student Government, it seems that it is not President Juan Cubillio who is acting as Ms. Megan Turetsky described in a “heinous” and “irresponsible” manner, but it is the Student Government as a whole who in putting personal interests first. They are failing in their due diligence to properly represent the student body who elected them.
In using social media to slander and publicly disgrace fellow members, many Student Government representatives fail to see their perceived role on campus as student leaders.
The situation our Student Government finds itself in right now is extremely relatable to that of the United States federal government, with the relative inability to compromise on even the most trivial of issues; it is preposterous to believe we can continue to let these individuals act in such childish and selfish ways. Like all democracies, many of the individuals who are in charge of our Student Government will seek reelection in the spring, and the constituents who they represent (Florida Gulf Coast University students) will remember their actions.
