‘Stranger Things’ gives 80’s thrillers a reboot

“Stranger Things” is a brand new Netflix thriller series. It stars Winona Ryder whose 12-year-old son, Will, played by Noah Schnapp, goes missing. The series is set in a small town in Indiana 1983 when the world was captivated with science fiction and the mysteries that surrounded it.
The small town of Hawkins is gathered to find Will, but his three best friends, Lucas, Mike, and Dustin, decide to take matters into their own hands. Venturing out into the woods where Will’s bicycle was found by the police, the three boys stumble upon a young girl who is the main focus point of the second plot to the series.
Though we do not yet know her name, the girl can be identified as “11” because of the small, minimal tattoo that is on her arm. She escapes the high security hospital in which she was being held, and finds herself in the kitchen of a restaurant. The owner catches her eating his food, and waits until he closes to finally talk to her. Scared and silent, “11” shows us what sort of character she really is: One with telekinesis.
With two stories going on at once, this sci-fi thriller has a Spielberg feel to it, and it is obviously influenced by “E.T.: The Extraterrestrial.”
Other characters such as Nancy Wheeler, the older sister of Mike, and Steve Harrington begin to break off into their own storyline. It revolves around their new relationship between a girl who is more focused on her schooling and grades and a boy who is known for his bad boy antics.
“Stranger Things” aired July 15, and it now has eight episodes ranging from 42 to 55 minutes. Each episode is titled as a chapter of a book, such as the first episode: “Chapter One: The Vanishing of Will Byers.” IMDb rated the series 9.1 out of 10, Rotten Tomatoes has given it a 90%, and it has received a 75% from Metacritic.
The dialogue is raw, the scene perfectly captures the 1980’s, and, according to flickeringmyth.com, “It just gets better.”
